HVAC Maintenance Tips

HVAC Heating and Cooling Equipment Maintenance Tips

Keeping your heating and cooling systems in good working condition will lower your energy bills, make your home more comfortable, and reduce your need for service calls.

Maintenance Scheduling

Schedule a maintenance service with Appleton Campbell before the heating or cooling seasons start.  If there are any problems with your system, it's better to find out before it's the onset of extreme hot or cold weather conditions.

Filters

Check your filters every month that they are in use and replace when needed.  Operating your system with old, dirty filters means energy is wasted and your system even may be damaged.

System Checks

Keep your furnace clear of clutter. Clutter is a fire hazard and may keep your system from operating efficiently.  Also, keep the registers and vents throughout your home free of dust, dirt and pet hair by vacuuming them at least once per year.  The lint and dust needs to be vacuumed from the baseboard fins as well.
Listen for odd sounds when starting your heating or cooling system.  If you hear anything unusual, contact Appleton Campbell so you can head off problems before they become serious.

Check around your indoor unit for leaking water.  Water leaks can cause extensive damage to your home, especially if your unit is on an upper floor or in an attic.  If you see water leaking, contact Appleton Campbell for service immediately.
If you have any fuel burning appliances, such as gas furnace, oil furnace, pellet stove, etc., you should have a carbon monoxide detector in your home.

Thermostats

Protect your thermostat from drafts so your heating or cooling system turns on only when you want to change the temperature.

Replace your old thermostat with a new digital thermostat, which will be more accurate. These new thermostats reduce the temperature swings of the older thermostats, which cause longer run times. Some may be set to automatically adjust the temperature at bedtime and in the morning. If you have a heat pump, be careful to select a setback thermostat specifically designed to work with heat pump systems.
