Smoke Detectors
Fires that happen at home can be extremely hazardous to your family and your possesions. The easiest way to prevent fires is to equip your home with high-quality smoke detectors.
Different types of detectors are triggered by different sensations. The three types of smoke detectors are photoelectric, ionization, and air-sampling detectors.
Photoelectric Smoke Detectors
When a photoelectric beam of light in the device is blocked, the detector is triggered. These blockages commonly occur when smoke initially collects on the ceiling during a house fire. Certain alarms in photoelectric detectors may also be triggered by the diffusion of light.
Ionization Smoke Detectors
Ionization detectors are more cost efficient but tend to have a higher rate of error in the form of false alarms. These extremely sensitive detectors are able to detect particles that cannot be seen by the naked eye. They function through the radiation of non-harmful alpha emissions. When smoke enters the ionization chamber, its current is disrupted and the alarm will sound. This type of detector contains the element americanium, which means it will never need to be replaced for its entire life.
Air-Sampling Smoke Detectors
Like ionization detectors, air-sampling detectors can detect particles that are invisble to the eye. An aspirating smoke detector, it has a central unit which circulates air through a network of pipes in order to detect smoke. This type of unit is preferred in areas that require high sensitivity of smoke detection.
Every home has different needs when it comes to smoke detectors. Extreme, highly sensitive detectors may not be necessary in your home, however, it never hurts to inquire.
